Bernice O'Neall, 99, of Tempe, Ariz. formerly of Afton area, died Sunday February 17, 2013, in Mesa. Funeral Services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday February 25, 2013, at the Powers Funeral Home in Creston, near the junction of highways 25 and 34. Pastor Jim Morris will officiate. Burial will be in the Hill of Zion Cemetery north east of Creston. There is no public visitation scheduled. Memorials in Bernice's name should be sent to the Afton United Methodist Church or the Tempe First United Methodist Church. Online condolences may be left under the obituary category of

Bernice Irene O'Neall, born October 9, 1913 in Union County, Iowa to Oscar Austin and Ona Wimmer Black passed away on February 17, 2013 in Mesa, AZ after a long illness. She was a long time resident of Tempe, AZ and member of Tempe First United Methodist Church. Prior to that she resided for many years in Afton, IA.

Bernice started her working life right out of high school teaching in a one-room country school house. As a newlywed, she and her husband, Hugh, owned and ran a restaurant in Des Moines, IA during the depression. She later was a bookkeeper at the Farmer's Cooperative Creamery in Afton, IA. Several years after moving to Arizona she drove a school bus for the Tempe school district and then began another career working for a state welfare investigative unit in Phoenix.

Bernice had a passion for gardening but what brought her the greatest joy in life was her family. She was preceded by her parents, her older sister, Cleo Crouch, and her husband, Hugh Wallace O'Neall , who passed away in March of 2000. Bernice is survived by her sons Russell (St. Louis, MO), Terry (Bella Vista, AR) and Steve (Sierra Vista, AZ) O'Neall; daughter Cathy Wickwire (Globe, AZ) as well as numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
