Betty Maltzahn, 86, of Creston died Sunday, February 10, 2013 at the Crest Haven Care Centre in Creston.

Family will receive friends Saturday, February 23 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Powers Funeral Home at the junction of highways 34 and 25 in Creston. Memorials are to the Arthritis Foundation. Online condolences can be left at www.powersfh.com.

Beatrice "Betty" Jane Smrkovski was born January 6, 1927 in Havelock, Iowa to James Anton Smrkovski and Agnes Pauline (Hronek) Smrkovski. She was the youngest and only girl of five children. Betty graduated from Pocahontas High School. She married Charles "Chuck" Maltzahn on June 26, 1945. They lived in various places in Iowa as Chuck advanced his career in the grocery business. Wherever they lived she made their house a home and worked at various jobs outside the home. She enjoyed crafts, sewing, gardening, canning and cooking. Betty was a wonderful cook and shared her cooking skills with many family members and friends through the years by preparing meals for others whenever needed. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Betty is survived by; her husband of 66 years, Charles Frederick Maltzahn; two sons, Steve (wife Marilyn) Maltzahn of Creston and Phil (wife Vicki) Maltzahn of Grand Island, Neb.; three grandchildren, Traci (husband Mike) Tamerius of Creston, Scott (wife Sandra) Maltzahn of Fort Collins, Col. and Todd Maltzahn of Fort Collins, Col.; four great-grandchildren, Jessica Tamerius of Iowa City, Alex Tamerius of Creston, Avery and Andre Maltzahn of Fort Collins, Col. She was preceded in death by; her parents; four brothers, Vern Smrkovski, Lester Smrkovski, Clarence Smrkovski and Gaylord Smrkovski.
