Throughout his youth, the family moved to Aurora, Illinois, Wheatland, Wyoming, Marion, Iowa, and Ankeny, Iowa. Chris attended Ankeny High School, graduating in 1999.
After graduation, Chris attended Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois, graduating with a degree in political science.
