Helen (Vance) Anderson was born March 4, 1914 in the farm house of her parents, George and Jennie Vance, three miles east of Mt. Ayr, and grew up in Lesanville, where the present day Ramsey Farm is located. After graduating from Mt. Ayr High School, she taught school for $40 a month for two years at the Walnut Valley one room country school in Washington Township in Ringgold County. On September 6, 1934 she married Wayne Anderson. From the time of their marriage during the depression years, they spent forty years farming in Union County and Ringgold County. They reared three children, Anne, Robert and Karen, all of whom they put through college. In the early 1950's, both Wayne and Helen came to saving faith in Jesus Christ. They worshiped at the First Baptist Church in Creston for nearly fifty years.
Helen was hard working. In the early years, among other farm tasks, she rendered lard and made lye soap, raised chickens, sewed dresses out of feed sacks for herself and her daughters and maintained a vegetable garden. She loved her family and was interested in everyone's lives and activities. In later years she enjoyed doing needle work, some of which she sold at Aunt Jennie's Attic in Mt. Ayr.
Helen is survived by; son, Robert (wife Nancy) Anderson of Tacoma, Wash.; daughter, Karen Ensing of Hudsonville, Mich.; grandson, Jonathan (wife Keren) Anderson of Tacoma, Wash.; great-grandchildren, Luke and Abigail Anderson of Tacoma, Wash. She was preceded in death by; husband, Wayne and daughter, Anne. Her children truly do "rise up and call her blessed." (Prov. 31:28).
