Merle Gilbert, 53 of Creston, passed away Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at his home in Creston.

Memorial services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 1, 2013 at the Powers Funeral Home in Creston.

There will not be a visitation held. Memorials are to the family. Online condolences can be left at

Merle Daniel Gilbert was born January 13, 1960 in Oregon City, Oregon to Violet Jean (Eggy) and Galen Ivan Gilbert. He graduated from East Union High School in 1978 and received his Associates Degree in Carpentry from SWCC. Merle was united in marriage to Dina Rutledge on January 11, 1989. Merle worked for Westman Siding for approximately 15 years, operated M&D Siding out of Creston and worked throughout the Midwest doing siding. Most recently, he worked with his brother Wes in Gilbert Salvage.

Survivors include his wife, Dina Gilbert of Creston; his mother, Violet Gilbert of Flippin, Ark.; three step-daughters Kelley Malone, Samantha Booth and Erikka (husband Eric) Godden, all of Creston; 9 grandchildren: James (wife Ashley) Creighton of Nashville, Tenn., Amanda Creighton of Creston, Hope Wiessman of Brooklyn, N.Y., Ashley (husband Tony) Mercer of Tingley, Ia., Jessie (husband Larry) Fish of Bethany, Mo., Taylor Murphy of Anita, Ia., Jacob Rutledge of Creston, Blayke Barker and Hunter Barker, all of Creston; great-grandchildren: Logan Mercer, Taven Fish, Bentleigh Collier and Jackson Mercer; and his step-mother, Blanche Gilbert of Shannon City. He is also survived by seven brothers: Wes Gilbert (special friend Jacque Hellberg of Shannon City, Terry Gilbert (special friend Vera Kozlovd) of Shannon City, Bernard "Chuck" (wife Marie) Gilbert of Yellville, Ark., James (wife Virginia) Day of Orlando, Fla., William (wife Gayle) Gilbert of Jacksonville, Fla., Johnnie (wife Geil) Gilbert of Kearney, Neb. and Larry (wife Saundra) Palmer of North Kansas City, Mo.; five sisters: Jennifer (husband Zach) Prosper of Flippin, Ark., Connie Vicker of Aurora, Colo., Gale Anne Jennings of Windsor, Colo., Jackie Greuter of Kearney, Neb. and Devie (husband Charlie) Bowman of Savannah, Mo.; and 32 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father Galen Gilbert in 1998 and both sets of grandparents.
