Darrell Ellis, Sr., 72, of Creston, died Monday, Feb. 6, 2012 at his home. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, 2012 at the Powers Funeral Home junction of highways 25 and 34 in Creston. Pastor Dan Moore will officiate. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery, south of Creston. Family receiving friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials are to the family. Online condolences can be left at www.powersfh.com.
Darrell Wesley Ellis, Sr. was born April 30, 1939 in Decatur County, Iowa to Earl Henry Ellis, and Grace Ruth Beatrice (Davis) Ellis. He attended Leon High School. Darrell lived in Leon and started playing the guitar at the age of 12 and began playing professionally at 16. Darrell and Jan Felton, were the parents of Tracey and Darla Felton. Years later, on December 21, 1981, Darrell was united in marriage to Connie (Fuller) Spicer in Creston and became parents of Darrell Ellis, II. He lived in various places, Leon, Davenport, Des Moines, Centerville and most recently in Creston. While being a professional musician all of his life, he worked also at various other jobs, including Dealer's Hobby, Farmall, pipeline work and other construction jobs. He worked throughout the country, traveling through the states of IA, MN, MO, NE, CO, TN, CA, ND, SD, IL and KS performing. Darrell and Connie divorced in 2002. Two of his favorite highlights were performing with Marvin Rainwater and Ernie Ashworth. He was a member of the Musicians Union and also enjoyed fishing.
Darrell is survived by two daughters: Darla Felton (husband Greg) Powell of Des Moines; Angie Spicer (husband Garry) Palmer of Leon; three sons: Tracey (wife Stephanie) Felton of Des Moines; Darrell Ellis, II of Creston; Lonnie (wife Merissa) Spicer of Rogers, Ark.; two brothers: Max Ellis of Davis City, IA.; Robert (wife Martha Ann) Davis of Grand River, IA; his ex-wife: Connie Ellis of Cainsville, Mo.; fifteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Earl and Grace Ellis, an infant sister, three brothers: Earl Ellis, Jr, Clarence Ellis, Rex Ellis, Sr, two sisters: Velma Houk and Maxine Nickel and his nephews: Rod Ellis and Roy Houk and Jan (Felton) Kent, mother of Tracey and Darla.
